Hello, I’m Renee Sakai from AP Learning.
Originally from Japan, I currently work as an instructional designer based in Canada.
What does an instructional designer do?
While “a person who designs and develops curricula aligned with learning objectives” might sound a bit formal, I prefer to use the term “an expert in creating effective learning environments.”
For example, when designing learning programs such as new employee onboarding training, we Instructional Designers (IDs) develop materials that ensure knowledge retention and build participants’ confidence, always keeping their backgrounds and goals in mind.
Why I Started AP Learning
My main motivation was career risk mitigation. You never know when you might lose your job, and stable careers are hard to guarantee today.
So I decided to leverage my core strength—education—and deliver it freely and on my own terms. That’s the idea that launched AP Learning.
The Philosophy of AP Learning
The foundation of effective learning is straightforward. What I value most for every learner is:
- Supporting them in achieving their goals
- Providing support that builds their confidence
This holds true whether in adult education, corporate training or even early childhood education. While approaches may differ, it is precisely those moments when learners feel “I did it!” that lead to knowledge retention and make learning enjoyable.
Future Outlook
Moving forward, I aim to gradually expand my activities while delivering the “joy of learning” and “effective learning experiences” to more people through AP Learning.
Looking forward to working with you!
Bonus: The Origin of the Name “AP Learning”
By the way, AP Learning stands for Awesome Pawsome Learning. It embodies the idea that “Learning is awesome!” and the feeling of “making progress, paw by paw.”
And honestly, I just really wanted to put paw prints in the logo (lol). It’s a playful name, but our philosophy and efforts are serious.
